M.S. in Health Education
The Master of Science in Health Education is a 36-hour degree program with the option to complete a thesis or non-thesis degree plan.
Students are provided the opportunities to:
- Develop a working knowledge of the literature of health education (including documentation of the history, competing philosophies, prominent theories and evidence-based practice of health education)
- Develop skills to read and apply research relevant to health education
- Prepare for professional leadership in the field
The program is grounded in the Responsibilities and Competencies for Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) developed by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC). Students completing the master’s program are prepared to sit for the exam to be a Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES).

Degree Plan
The program requires interaction with an accomplished group of professional health educators and the study of a unique body of knowledge. It is based on a set of core responsibilities and competencies and facilitates the development of a competitive scholastic and professional portfolio for students.
Non-Thesis
In the non-thesis program, students are required to complete a block of core courses (the Health Education Core), a professional internship and elective coursework. Decisions on elective coursework are determined by the student with their Graduate Advisory Committee Chair and based on interests and career goals.
Thesis
The thesis program is research-oriented, but requires competence as a practicing health educator. Students are required to complete a block of core courses (the Health Education Core), research and statistic courses and elective coursework. Decisions on elective coursework are determined by the student with their Graduate Advisory Committee Chair and based on interests and career goals.
Teacher Certification
The M.S. in Health with an emphasis in teacher certification is designed for individuals seeking careers in education or education-related environments. The program is designed to provide requisite knowledge and skills needed to receive Texas teacher certification in Health.

Areas of research include health behaviors throughout the lifespan such as sex-related behaviors and substance abuse; comprehensive school health; health equity; genomics; global health; health program evaluation; community capacity; and network analysis.

Can you guide me through the application process?
Completed Application: A completed application. Fill out information on the GraduateCAS website. The name on your application must match your name as it appears in your passport. Application Fee: A non-refundable $89application fee for domestic applicants and $114 application fee for international applicants. The application fee may be paid by check, money order or approved credit card. Applicants who wish to pay by credit card may do so as part of the online application. If you are unable to pay the fee online, you may call the Graduate Admissions Office at 979-845-1060. Official Transcripts and Records: Submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended. NOTE: You do not need to submit an official transcript from Texas A&M University. For information on submitting official transcripts to Texas A&M University, please visit their website.
